Linear pumps of the type shown in U.S. Pat. No. 4,231,622 usually have a reciprocating plunger which reciprocates between a retracted position and an extended position. In its extended position, the plunger is located at a position where it can be received by the portion of the pump housing having a check valve. In its retracted position, the plunger is spaced away from the check valve so that liquid from the liquid reservoir can be sucked into the pump chamber. After the liquid has been drawn into the pump chamber, the check valve opens and the plunger moves toward its extended position, thereby expelling the liquid contained in the pump chamber. The check valve closes as the plunger reaches its extended position and the check valve remains closed until the next cycle begins. Typically, the pump includes a pulse valve which closes the pump chamber while the check valve is opened.
In some cases, it may be desirable for the pump to regulate the pressure of the liquid before expelling the liquid out of the pump chamber. Regulation can be achieved by adjusting the cross-sectional area of the pump chamber. Increasing the cross-sectional area of the chamber will increase the rate of flow of the liquid through the chamber. In many cases, the current linear pumps provide a constant volume flow and do not have a mechanism for regulating the flow of liquid through the pump. Thus, if the rate of flow of liquid through the chamber is increased, the rate of liquid expulsion from the chamber will be increased.
