The environmental and social groups who wish to see biodiversity protected have therefore been putting pressure on the European Commission for a long time, in order to form this strategy.

"The biodiversity strategy is a must," says Paul Tol, president of Amigos de las Naturas, who is also in charge of the German-language site wetlands.org.

"It's very good that the Commission has come to that point now that it will inform the parliament and that the policy will be published," he said.
