While traveling through Siberia to visit her husband, Anna meets the handsome, impetuous Count Vronsky. Vronsky is so obsessive and self-absorbed that he is persona non grata at his family's estate, and Anna invites him in. Although he instantly falls in love with her, she is disinterested in him, even jealous of his true love's honor. Vronsky offers to drive her car across Europe. This is the beginning of their affair, which culminates in Vronsky's betrayal of Anna. Vronsky eventually stands by Anna's side while she miscarries a baby and then gives birth to a daughter. Soon the Count is back in her life and Anna understands that a relationship with another woman is out of the question. Nonetheless, she still feels guilty over Vronsky's infatuation with her, and he breaks it off with his wife. As for the Count, he finally learns that Anna is married, but thinks that it doesn't matter because he loves her. Anna has also fallen in love with Vronsky, and they live together in Paris.
In the Soviet Union of 1954, Anna is working as a journalist. Her husband Vasili, a diplomat, has sent her secretly to meet a young man with whom he has had an affair. After discovering the affair, Anna leaves her husband, but she continues to pursue the young man, who has already married someone else. He runs away from Anna, but she pursues him, and attempts suicide by drinking. She does not, and her hopes are restored when she finds his letters and learns that he is still in love with her. She returns to her husband, and brings her 9-year-old daughter, Vanya, to live with their family after the child has been separated from her parents. In the course of the novel, she falls in love with Vanya's teacher Aleksandr Turgenev. Later she discovers that at a party, she and her husband are dancing as a married couple to the song \"Tea For Two.\" 7211a4ac4a
