Gregory B. Jones is a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments in Washington, D.C. He writes about and studies counterinsurgency and asymmetrical warfare, and has written or edited more than a dozen books on these topics. Education

Jones graduated from St. John's College and Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. He has a Ph.D. in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and an M.A. in Political Science from Georgetown University.

Career

Gregory Jones is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA), a non-profit organization. He is also Director of Programs for the Henry L. Stimson Center. He has previously taught at the U.S. Army War College, the U.S. Military Academy, and the University of Scranton. He is the author or co-author of more than a dozen books and monographs on topics related to counterinsurgency and asymmetric warfare. Jones has done extensive work with political actors around the world. He has assisted the governments of Peru, Uganda, Yemen, Tanzania, Algeria, and Tunisia to plan for or deal with insurgency. His analysis has been featured in several media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Foreign Affairs.

Jones has provided expert testimony to the U.S. Congress and is a frequent commentator on issues related to counterinsurgency and asymmetric warfare on radio and television.

Views

Jones is known for advocating a gradual withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. He has advocated for a troop withdrawal from Iraq as well, but says that this is "a matter of confidence, not expediency." He has argued that the United States can accomplish its objectives in Afghanistan without relying on a conventional ground force, although he has acknowledged that it will be more difficult to achieve this aim in a country with a much more complex political and social structure than Iraq.
